A good idea for the context of your project will make your experience more enjoyable and produce a better result. There's no formula for generating a good idea, but good ideas have common characteristics. Below are some things to consider as you come up with an idea for your project…
1. Good ideas solve a specific, compelling problem or leverage an opportunity. They are narrowly conceived (don't try to accomplish everything) and unique--no one else should be solving this problem in quite the same way.
2. Cast a wide net for your ideas. Ask friends, family, and professors about the challenges they face that an information system can address. Look for inspiration in the startup world, such as kickstarter or indiegogo. Think about the potential information needs embedded in emerging technologies or domains:
Mashup (e.g., combining two or more existing data sources, such as google maps + rental website data)
Personal or information security (e.g., audits, bodycams)
Information alert (e.g., sales, events, notifications)
4. As you start to formulate your idea, think about the information necessary to justify its value to others. Look at successfully funded project pitches for inspiration: https://attach.io/startup-pitch-decks/
5. Get feedback on your ideas. Pitch them to Dr. Win, fellow classmates, family members. This will not only help shape your idea and tell you if it’s interesting, it will help you get clarity about the idea as you communicate it to others.
